PUSSYLAND
In 2012 I exhibited this series of mixed media artworks at Mailbox Artspace in Naarm/Melbourne as part of the Midsumma Festival visual arts program. The small scale prints combine digital photography and craft, with each image hand decorated with artificial jewels and other craft store embellishments in a celebration of kitsch aesthetics.
The photographs were taken at a friend’s house in the suburbs of Mackay, Queensland. Known locally - and nationally - as the Cat Lady, Phyllis had a collection of thousands of ornamental felines in her home and garden, which was filled with murals (many of which I painted) and other fantastical creatures and outrageous decor. The photos were taken shortly before her death in 2012 and the resulting series of artworks is dedicated to her memory.
